About Us

Overview

At Harrington Hospital we provide comprehensive healthcare to the residents and communities of South Central Massachusetts and Northeastern Connecticut. Committed to Total Local Care (TLC), we provide compassionate care and advanced technology close to home. We are continuing a long tradition of offering integrated services, including comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care along with community outreach programs.

Founded in 1931, Harrington Hospital has always operated as a nonprofit institution governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, serving the best interests of the public. Today, Harrington is a comprehensive regional healthcare system anchored by Harrington Hospital, a modern, 114-bed acute care hospital. In addition to Harrington Hospital, we have a freestanding cancer treatment center on our hospital campus, a comprehensive outpatient facility in nearby Webster, a large medical office building in Charlton and satellite physician offices throughout the region (see our At a Glance section for more information). Despite our growth, our mission has been constant: to provide our patients with high-quality medical services in a safe environment.

Services*

Advanced Technology

Harrington has made significant investments in the most sophisticated equipment and technology available. Our commitment to advanced technology is reflected throughout the hospital. Some examples include:

  • Diagnostic Imaging features cutting-edge MRI, CT, and digital mammography.
  • Orthopedic Surgery offers the latest developments in custom-fit, total knee replacement.
  • OB/Gyn includes laparoscopic surgery with the latest in minimally invasive supracervical hysterectomy.
  • IT advancements include MEDHOST, a software program that chronicles patients’ visits to the ER and will interface with Harrington’s EMR system.

The Cancer Center at Harrington

One of Harrington’s most far-reaching, recent achievements is an on-campus, $14 million, 21,000-square-foot cancer center, a joint venture with 21st Century Oncology. Harrington’s portion of the facility, which offers a wide array of services, including infusion/chemotherapy and counseling, is called The Cancer Center at Harrington. The facility features the area’s most advanced radiation and medical oncology. Patients don’t have to travel to Boston, Springfield, or Worcester to receive world-class cancer care. Link.

Harrington Physician Services

Our growing affiliated physician group, Harrington Physician Services, employs approximately 40 primary care and specialty physicians throughout Southern Worcester County, with offices in Brimfield, Charlton, Webster, Dudley, Southbridge, Sturbridge, and Charlton.

Hospital Collaborations

Our Diagnostic Imaging Department collaborates with renowned Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and we have relationships with Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Medical Center. Harrington is also a teaching hospital for University of Massachusetts Medical students. In addition, we assumed the management of Hubbard Hospital in Webster, transitioning it to Harrington Healthcare at Hubbard, an outpatient facility with 24/7 emergency care, laboratory, clinic, rehabilitation, ambulatory surgery, radiology, and cardiopulmonary.

Physician Expansion

Every year, Harrington does an analysis of its current medical staff and, when appropriate, seeks to recruit and retain the best in primary and specialty care for its patients. Many of our physicians are hospital-employed through our affiliate group Harrington Physician Services (see above).

Hospitalist Program

Our board-certified Hospitalists provide on-site physician care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Hospitalists work with patients’ primary care physicians and consult with other specialists as needed, providing excellent clinical care and prompt response. Link.

Community Expansion

To make care more accessible in outlying communities, we have opened satellite physician offices and medical buildings in Southbridge, Sturbridge, Charlton, Dudley, and Brimfield. We opened a two-story medical office building on Route 20 in Charlton, with digital mammography offered in collaboration with Harvard Medical Faculty physicians from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The office also houses primary care and specialty care doctors, behavioral health services, rehabilitation services, diagnostic imaging, a phlebotomy draw station, and wound care treatment.

Outreach Programs

Our community educational programs include George B. Wells Human Services Center and other offices of our Behavioral Health Sciences organization as well as our Health Education Department. G.B. Wells offers diagnostic evaluations; individual, family, or marital counseling; psychiatric evaluations, medication monitoring, and crisis intervention to those with psychological, emotional, or behavioral challenges. The Health Education Department provides cardiac rehabilitation, childbirth education, prenatal programs, diabetes workshops, and community wellness programs. Link.

Auxiliary

Auxiliary members volunteer time to support personalized patient care and improve healthcare throughout our community. The Auxiliary and Volunteer Department run fund-raising projects to support community health programs and augment hospital needs. Link.

Renovations

Highlights of our $20 million renovations program include the opening of new private and semi-private patient rooms with flat-screen cable TV, Wi-Fi access, the area’s only an o verhead lift; new patient floors; and a Women’s Health Center.
