"Neighbors helping neighbors." That describes the Harrington Auxiliary, a growing group of dedicated individuals who have joined together since 1932, a year after the hospital opened. Since then, members have volunteered their time and services to further the well-being of our hospital and the community.
We work to create a friendly, helpful atmosphere in the hospital, and we also build goodwill and lead many fund-raising ventures-including Harrington's Gift Shop, located in the hospital lobby, which we manage along with the Volunteer department.
Every year we award scholarships to area students pursuing careers in health care. In 2009, the Auxiliary awarded four scholarships of $4,000 each. The money for these scholarships is raised from our Annual Lucky Duck Day in April. Our Appropriations Grant Program in 2009 awarded a total of $28,895 toward equipment and project costs for Harrington HealthCare System departments. The Appropriations Grant Progam is funded by sales from our Gift Shop.
One of our most exciting moments in 2010 will be the opening of our newly renovated, enlarged Gift Shop. Our creative and talented managers will have a display of beautiful gifts and floral arrangements for your shopping pleasure.
On June 20, 2009, we commemorated 8 ½ months of fundraising for the new Cancer Center at Harrington with the spectacular Evening Under the Stars event. More than 500 people turned out to recognize and celebrate both the opening of the Cancer Center and the hundreds of organizations and individuals who donated their time and money to help build the Center. A high point of the evening was the Auxiliary's presentation of a check for $150,000 to Harrington President and CEO Ed Moore. We continue to sell bricks for the Walkway of Hope leading to the Cancer Center. We also accept donations throughout the year.
We invite you to become part of this great tradition and join our Auxiliary. We welcome men and women age 18 and older from the Harrington HealthCare System community. You'll find many opportunities to apply your skills and experiences and address key needs throughout the hospital. You'll also enjoy a variety of social events, expand your knowledge of Harrington's role in the community, and help make a difference in the lives of your neighbors.
