Expansion/Renovations Planned

With the full support of the Board of Directors and with input from the medical staff, the long-term program of renovating and expanding services and facilities at the hospital is underway. The ultimate goal of this effort is aimed at providing the hospital and medical staff with the facilities and services necessary to continue to meet the medical and healthcare needs of the residents of South Central Massachusetts, while:

  • Making the hospital more user-friendly for patients and their families.
  • Offering more privacy to our patients, and
  • Providing more space to our physicians, staff and volunteers, and
  • Preparing the hospital for future technology and space requirements.
PHASE ONE Scheduled to be completed in three phases, the expansion and renovation program is addressing the following issues:
1. Increasing space available to the Laboratory to eliminate congestion
2. Expanding the patient registration area to accommodate the increasing numbers of outpatients coming to the hospital for medical services.
3. Developing additional medical office space
4. Renovation of 2North and 3North to eliminate all three-bed inpatient rooms in favor of single and two-bed rooms.
5. Relocation and expansion of Same Day Surgery Unit to accommodate patient demand.
6. Expansion and renovation of the Surgical Suite to contemporary standards Other issues being addressed include allocating additional space to the Radiology Department, Cardiovascular Center, Respiratory Therapy/Pulmonary Medicine, Central Sterile Supply, which will likely occur through the relocation of administrative offices from the first floor of the hospital. Patient registration is often the first point of encounter with the Hospital. It once was the domain for inpatients, but the dramatic shift to outpatient care, with increased numbers, has taxed the current department. Concern for the needs of the patients and families: privacy, responsiveness and comfort can be met only by renovating and expanding the area. This will provide much needed added, contemporary interview stations as well as adequate waiting space. Patient registration will be moved up one flight to the current lab location. Administrative offices will move off that floor to allow for expansion of radiology. Also included in The logistics:
In Phase I patient registration and the lab and medical office space will be increased. Patient registration will be moved up one flight to the current lab location. The Laboratory will be moved except for the areas, which deal directly with patients (such as blood-draws). Increasingly, patients are here as outpatients likely to need radiology and blood work so that having all these services on one floor would be much more convenient to the public. Administrative offices will move off that floor to allow for expansion of radiology.
PHASE TWO Renovate patient floors 2 North and 3 North to eliminate all three-bed inpatient rooms in favor of single and two-bed inpatient rooms. All who come here for their care expects inpatient privacy and comfort. This cannot be provided adequately in three-bed rooms. Contemporary standards call for single and two-bed rooms, and this will be met renovating these two floors. Relocate and expand Same Day Surgery to accommodate patient demand Surgical procedures today are done more on an outpatient basis. But the Harrington Memorial Hospital surgical department was designed for mostly inpatient care. In addition, technology and advanced surgical procedures have changed dramatically in just a short period of time. To respond to these advances that are often less invasive and thus less depilating, the Hospital must relocate and expand Same Day Surgery. Also included in PHASE TWO will be the relocation of Central Sterile Supply and added space for new program in Uro-dynamics. The Logistics During Phase II 2North and 3 North will be renovated. When completed all triple rooms will be eliminated; only double and single occupancy rooms will emerge from the renovation. Same-day surgery will be relocated to 3 north and central sterile supply go to the space now occupied by same day surgery. During this phase the OR space will obtain more area for counseling with physicians and patient holding, PHASE THREE During Phase III all operating rooms will be updated and renovated. Surgical Suite will require many upgrades to meet contemporary standards. And two new operating rooms will be added to accommodate the technology and space requirements for the very latest surgical procedures.
