Diabetes Education
Do you have diabetes? Do you know how to self manage your diabetes?
Our Diabetes Education Department at Harrington Memorial Hospital does both in-patient and outpatient one-on-one diabetic education. The diabetic Educator helps patients and family members to understand and manage their diabetes. We go thru basic facts about diabetes, risk factors, treatment plans, basic meal planning and carbohydrate counting (until the patient can see dietitian for consult). We also review diabetes medications, i.e. oral or insulin, show patients and families how to use syringes and give insulin injections. We teach use of blood glucose monitoring equipment, go thru potential complications of diabetes, what to do on sick days, and hypo/hyperglycemia sign and symptoms and how to treat. We teach proper needle disposal, and coping with diabetes. . We now can offer insulin pump training also.
We encourage patients and S.O. to attend our support group, It's free and meets from 6pm-7:30 pm usually second Wednesday each month, where ways to decrease stress and increase exercise and carbohydrate counting are learned to help decrease blood glucose. Call for dates.
We also have a Gestational Diabetes program, where we loan pregnant mothers who are diagnosised with gestational diabetes a monitor and do all diabetic teaching with them. After the delivery, they return the monitor.
We also run diabetes class with the dietitian a couple time a year.
Please call (508)765-9771 ext. 2692 for more information.
