Harrington HealthCare System Earns Coveted 2015 Top Hospital Distinction from Leapfrog

SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. – December 8, 2015 – For the third year in a row, The Leapfrog Group has selected Harrington HealthCare System as one of the nation’s Top Hospitals for patient care. This recognition is awarded to hospitals for demonstrating excellence in hospital safety and quality as measured through the respected Leapfrog Hospital Survey.  This year, Harrington was one of 62 hospitals nationwide, one of only five hospitals in Massachusetts, and the only hospital in South Central Massachusetts to receive this distinction. Only 21 hospitals nationwide have been named Top Hospital three years in a row.

The awards were announced at Leapfrog’s Top Hospitals Awards Ceremony held on Wednesday, December 2 in Washington, D.C.

“We take great pride in being recognized as a Top Hospital for the third year in a row,”

said Ed Moore, Harrington President & CEO. “We focus every day on the quality, safety, and satisfaction of our patients. To be one of a select list of hospitals across the country is quite an honor.”

The award follows Harrington’s eighth straight “A” score–the highest letter grade available–in Leapfrog’s recent safety survey, which is conducted twice annually and involves more than 2,500 hospitals.

In addition to the Top Hospital recipients there were also 24 Top Rural Hospitals and 12 Top Children’s Hospitals. The winning facilities included academic medical centers, teaching hospitals, and community hospitals.

The selection is based on the results of The Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures established to prevent errors. Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including survival rates for high-risk procedures and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors.

“Leapfrog’s Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Top Hospitals have lower infection rates, better outcomes, decreased length of stay and fewer readmissions. By achieving Top Hospital status, Harrington has proven it prioritizes the safety of its patients, is committed to transparency, and provides exemplary care for families and patients in Southbridge and the surrounding areas. I congratulate the board, staff, and clinicians of Harrington whose efforts achieved these results.”

The Top Hospital award is presented to urban, rural, and children’s hospitals that publicly report their performance through the annual Leapfrog Hospital Survey and meet the high standards defined in each year’s Top Hospitals Methodology.
