Venous Wound Recurrance Prevention

How Can I Prevent Venous Wounds From Occurring Again?

Give your legs a rest:
Elevate your legs at least parallel to the ground while sitting. Avoid work that requires you to stand or sit with your feet on the ground for long periods of time.

Give your legs support:
Wear your professionally made support stockings every day and remove at night while you sleep. Replace stockings every 4-6 months so their strength doesn't wear out. (Call your Primary Care Physician to obtain a prescription to purchase new stockings.)

Take care of your skin:
Inspect legs and feet daily and report any increased swelling, new wounds, increased pain, redness, or infection to your Primary Care Physician.) Make sure to wash your lower legs and feet regularly with mild soap and water. Avoid activities that are likely to cause injury to legs and feet. Moisturize skin over lower legs and feet daily.

Eat well-balanced meals
Avoid overeating. Extra weight adds pressure on the veins in your legs. Limit salt (sodium) intake because it promotes fluid retention and check your food labels!

Follow Up with your physician:
Call The Wound Care Center at Harrington if your wound reopens or new wounds occur. If you have any other questions about your follow up care or these instructions, contact us at 508-248-6780.
