Neurology
Adults receive comprehensive inpatient and outpatient neurological services at Harrington Hospital, where we provide diagnosis and treatment for disorders of the nervous system. We also maintain a neurology satellite office in Quinebaug, Conn.
Physicians treat patients sufferings from strokes, brain injuries, cognitive impairment, migraines, dizziness, epileptic seizures, movement disorders (Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease), multiple sclerosis, ALS, Alzheimer's, speech and language disorders, complications with diabetes, encephalitis, meningitis, and post-traumatic concussion syndrome.
Using state-of-the-art technology in our Neurovascular Lab, physicians test patients with duplex scanning, EEG (electroencephalogram), and EMG (electromyography). EEGs test patients' brain waves for functional disorders such as epileptic seizures. EMGs test patients for muscle and nerve disorders. This on-site lab ensures patients of accurate and prompt response time.
As of December 2009, we are expecting the latest in remote duplex scan technology, which will enable physicians to read tests online at home.
In addition, in our Emergency Care Center, we provide real-time, around-the-clock telemedicine, connecting patients with experts at Mass. General Hospital through video conferencing. This enables patients with strokes to receive prompt treatment such as tPA (Tissue Plasminogen Activator), a clot-solving medicine.
