Harrington Emergency Department Physicians Donate to Campaign

WEBSTER, Mass., January 21, 2014 — The Emergency Department Physicians at Harrington HealthCare System have donated $62,756 to Harrington HealthCare Systems campaign to raise $8.8 million to build a new Emergency Department at Harringtons Webster campus.

“The reconstruction of the Emergency Department at Harrington HealthCare at Hubbard will help us provide the highest quality emergency care for many years to come to residents of Webster, Dudley, Douglas, Oxford and surrounding communities,” said James Sullivan, M.D., Medical Director of the Harrington HealthCare System Emergency Care Department. “The donation by these 11 physicians is a gesture of good will and appreciation of Harringtons long-term commitment to healthcare in the region.”

The donation brings the total raised in the campaign thus far to more than $3 million. The total will be doubled, to $6 million, because of a $4 million matching grant from Arthur Remillard Jr. and his Remillard Family Foundation, which is the largest donor to the campaign. The new Emergency Department will be known as the Remillard Family Emergency Department because of the matching grant from Mr. Remillard, the founder of Commerce Insurance in Webster, and his Remillard Family Foundation,

In recognition of the donation, the ambulance bay in the new facility will bear the inscription Harrington Emergency Department Physicians — In Honor of the Emergency Department Staff.

“We chose that inscription to honor all the staff who have provided such outstanding care to our patients over the years,” said Dr. Sullivan.

Harrington broke ground on the project on Oct. 8, 2013. The reconstruction of the Emergency Department is expected to be complete by the fall of 2014.

The Emergency Department at 340 Thompson Road in Webster handles more than 12,000 visits a year. But this vital health resource in the community has not seen a renovation or a significant overhaul since it was constructed in 1955. The rebuilding project will increase the number of beds from five to nine, increase the square footage from 3,000 square feet to 10,000 square feet, and allow Harrington to accommodate the increased patient traffic it expects in the years to come.
