Harrington Hires Katherine Mason, M.D., for New Pain Management and Palliative Care Center

SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. – August 15, 2013 – Harrington HealthCare System has hired Katherine Mason, M.D., a physician with an interest in interventional approaches to chronic pain, palliative care and cancer pain management, and is launching The Pain Management and Palliative Care Center located at The Cancer Center at Harrington.

Dr. Mason received her medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine and is board eligible in Pain Management. She recently completed a fellowship in pain medicine and palliative care at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

The Pain Management and Palliative Care Center at Harrington offers interventional or longer-term treatment to help patients regain their mobility and chronic pain brought on by a variety of causes, including arthritis, sciatica, injury or trauma, muscle spasms, neuropathy, surgery and spinal stenosis.

The center also offers a comprehensive, patient-focused approach to palliative care. Palliative care focuses on relieving or preventing suffering for patients at any stage of an illness, including those managing difficult symptoms as they go through treatment for curable illnesses and those living with chronic, sometimes incurable diseases. The program supports both patients and families through this process and is focused on improving the quality of life and reducing a patients suffering or distress.

Harringtons palliative care team includes nurses, dieticians, social workers and others who work together to provide patients and their families with advanced support systems to manage difficult symptoms or advanced illnesses.

In addition to her degree in medicine, Dr. Mason has a Master of Arts in Medical Science and a Master of Public Health in Social and Behavioral Sciences from Boston University.
