SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. – Oct. 14, 2010 – Dr. James J. Sullivan Jr. has been named Chief of the Emergency Care Center and Emergency Medicine Service at Harrington HealthCare System. The Emergency Medicine physician will be in charge of the Emergency Departments in Southbridge at Harrington Hospital and in Webster at Harrington HealthCare at Hubbard.
Then, by the end of the year, the military physician will be deployed as an Emergency Medicine doctor with the U.S. Military in Afghanistan for approximately one year. Sullivan is in the Active Navy Reserve.
“We are extremely pleased that we have recruited a physician of Jims caliber to head the Emergency Care Center on both our Southbridge and Webster campuses,” said Ed Moore, President and CEO of Harrington HealthCare System. “Despite Jims lengthy stay in Afghanistan, we are holding the position of Chief of our Emergency Care Center open for him on his return from overseas duty. We are all praying for Jims safe and timely return!”
“I am very much looking forward to being a part of the new Emergency Medicine management team and am grateful for the confidence that Ed Moore and the Senior Leadership Team at Harrington Hospital have shown in me,” Sullivan said. “I am particularly grateful for their understanding of my involvement with the Navy Reserve. They have been utterly supportive of my mobilization orders.”
Sullivan received his Doctorate in Medicine from the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine in Camden, N.J. and is an Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine at University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine.
Said Moore, “Having a board certified physician as Chief advances our requirement to have all physicians in our Webster Emergency Care Center board certified in Emergency Medicine. Because our Webster campus is an outpatient facility, the state Department of Health will require us to use only board certified physicians by 2012.”
Sullivan also has a long record of service in the U.S. Military, and has served as a staff physician with the Department of Emergency Medicine with the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va. He has also served as the attending physician with the U.S. Military Hospital at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait and is a member of the Institutional Review Board at the United States Military Hospital in Kuwait.
