High-risk Obstetrics

UMass’ Maternity Center is the only hospital in central Massachusetts with high-risk pregnancy specialists (obstetricians who have advanced training in maternal-fetal medicine).

The Medical Center can handle the complications of pregnancy whether due to various medical conditions such as kidney or heart disease, seizure disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes and problems in a previous pregnancy or that develop suddenly during your pregnancy or your delivery.

Childbirth Preparation Courses

Harrington offers childbirth preparation courses several times per year, open to expectant parents in all our communities. We also offer weekly and evening drop-in breastfeeding support classes, open to all breastfeeding moms. These courses are flexible and can be tailored to your family’s needs.

4-Week Comprehensive Class Schedule: This course offers an in-depth look at the entire childbirth process to make you and your partner feel comfortable. Topics covered include signs of preterm labor, what to bring to your birthing center, pain medication options, natural comfort techniques, Cesarean birth, postpartum, newborn care, and infant CPR. Courses are typically held Monday evenings from 6 – 8 p.m.

Breastfeeding Course (2-hour session): Topics covered include latching, position techniques, managing difficulties, going back to work, and pumping/storing milk. Course typically held 6-8 p.m.

Prenatal & Obstetric Expertise and Support

Obstetric patients within our Harrington footprint are encouraged to join Women’s Health of Central Massachusetts’ OB/GYN practice for their prenatal care. Their newest location is 164 South Street in Southbridge.

WHCMA patients will deliver their baby at UMass Memorial Medical Center Maternity Center in Worcester, MA.

UMass’ Maternity Center provides compassionate care for moms while delivering 4,000 babies per year and has the region’s only Level III NICU.

The benefit to receiving pre- and postnatal care within the south central MA community includes not having to travel a long distance for a routine appointment, pay for parking, and having quick access to your prenatal care providers. Patients within our community can access:

Comprehensive childbirth & breastfeeding education to ensure a healthy pregnancy through Harrington’s Maternal Educator;
Comprehensive postpartum and follow-up care to make sure that mom, baby and family are doing great.

Complete this form and return it to the UMass Memorial Medical Center address below at least six weeks before your due date. If significant changes occur between the time the form is completed and your admission, notify the Patient Registration Department at 508-334-6097 with changes (e.g., health insurance, employment, etc.).
