Are Mammograms Safe?

Yes. The benefits of getting screened regularly and preventing breast cancer far outweigh any risks associated with the test.

Today’s mammogram machines have extremely low doses of radiation. According to the American Cancer Society, people in the United States are normally exposed to an average of about 3 mSv (the measure of radiation dose) of radiation each year just from their natural surroundings. The total dose for a typical mammogram with 2 views of each breast is about 0.4 mSv.
