Fundación MAPFRE Donates $200,000 to Harrington HealthCare System for Purchase of PPE

Donation is part of $38 million contribution to global coronavirus relief

SOUTHBRIDGE, MA – Fundación MAPFRE, a global nonprofit foundation created by MAPFRE, has donated $200,000 to Harrington HealthCare System to support the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE) for HHS staff during the coronavirus pandemic, including medical masks, gloves, gowns, face shields and other personal protective equipment.

The donation is part of $38 million in contributions made by the foundation to coronavirus relief efforts worldwide, including $2.3 million to support urgent medical and community needs across Massachusetts, which is the U.S. headquarters for the foundation.

“We are overwhelmed at the generosity of this donation, which will help to protect our patients, staff and community from the spread of COVID-19,” said Harrington HealthCare System President and CEO Edward Moore.

“The amount of PPE required to safely care for patients has greatly increased as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. This donation will make a significant impact in offsetting the additional cost to purchase such a large volume of PPE, especially at a time when these items are in such short supply. On behalf of our entire staff, our patients and the communities we serve, I’d like to express our deep gratitude to Fundación MAPFRE for their donation, not only to us but to healthcare organizations and communities across Massachusetts and around the world,” Moore said.

Other Massachusetts organizations that have received a donation from the foundation include: Boston Medical Center; UMass Memorial Health Care; the City of Boston; and Massachusetts General Hospital.

“We are extremely concerned about the impact coronavirus continues to have on our communities and medical facilities,” said Alfredo Castelo, chief representative of Fundación MAPFRE in the U.S. “We hope this contribution will help individuals and families in need and provide critical supplies for our health care professionals and first responders on the front line during the outbreak.”

Fundación MAPFRE’s global aid package will benefit coronavirus relief efforts in 27 countries.

“The fight against the coronavirus encompasses all sectors of society. Institutions, such as Fundación MAPFRE, are called more than ever, to take action, with solidarity measures that promote social cohesion and equal opportunities, “said Antonio Huertas, president of MAPFRE and Fundación MAPFRE.
