Karen Spiewak Named Director of Development for Harrington HealthCare System

SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. – September 23, 2016 – Karen Spiewak, a Charlton resident with strong community ties, has been named director of development for Harrington HealthCare System.

In her new position, Karen will be responsible for raising awareness of Harrington’s mission, aims and goals and developing positive relationships with individuals and groups interested in supporting those goals. She will also be responsible for developing a strategic philanthropy plan for the healthcare system that includes appeals, events, grant-writing, maintenance of donor records, acknowledgement of donor gifts and ensuring that all legal reporting requirements are satisfied.

“I am excited to be part of the Harrington family,” Karen said. “I look forward to raising funds, raising awareness and recruiting new partners to help Harrington better serve the approximately 150,000 people in our 21-community service area.”

Karen is familiar with Harrington’s footprint and business development. She began as a consultant to the hospital in 2007 and assisted with the capital campaign for the new Remillard Family Emergency Department in Webster. She has secured a number of grants to purchase medical equipment and enhanced patient care services, and she helped develop the hospital’s major gift development plan, among other initiatives. She served as a member of Harrington’s board of directors from 2013 to 2016 and is a member of the Harrington Hospital Auxiliary.

Karen has been active in her community for more than 25 years and has helped secure millions in grants for local and regional organizations. She served on the revenue enhancement committee of the Central Massachusetts Regional Library System executive board, the Charlton Public Library capital campaign committee and the Dudley-Charlton Education Foundation.

Karen has  been a member of the Charlton Government Study Committee,  the Dudley-Charlton Regional School  Committee, the Charlton Elementary and Middle School Councils, the Charlton PTO and the Southbridge Wellness Committee and is the current president of Woman in Business, Inc., an organization that supports women by fostering networking, sharing information and providing educational opportunities. She is also a member of the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy.

She graduated from Worcester State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in health counseling and health services and a master’s degree in health education. She is the president and proprietor of Spiewak Consultants, which offers health and personal safety seminars for all ages.

Karen lives in Charlton with her husband, Joe. They have two children.
