WEBSTER, Mass. – January 29, 2015 – The new Remillard Family Emergency Department officially opened its doors on Thursday, January 29 to see patients at the Harrington HealthCare at Webster campus at 340 Thompson Road.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health gave its approval last week. Harrington staff, including nursing and administration, has been working for several weeks to transition patient care to the new area.
The $8.8 million facility marks the first significant renovation to the Emergency Department in more than 30 years. The features include nine private exam rooms, a separate ambulance entrance, two new waiting rooms, enhanced patient privacy, and a renovated central registration area.
“This ushers in a new era of healthcare for the community,” said Harrington’s Chief of Emergency Medicine, Jim Sullivan, M.D. “Our staff is excited to open the doors for patients and provide optimal care for the next generation.”
According to Dr. Sullivan, the transition of care was seamless, with the old Emergency Department closing as the new one opened. The former entrance to the Emergency Department will now be closed, hospital officials stated.
The front entrance will now serve as the main entry for patients and visitors into the facility, including those arriving for radiology testing, sleep, or lab work. There will continue to be separate entrances for the Harrington Physician Services offices.
Monitor Builders, Inc. served as construction manager for the project, with the assistance of DiGiorgio Associates of Boston. The new-and-renovated 13,000-square-foot addition took just over 13 months to complete.
The project was made possible largely in part to Arthur Remillard, Jr. and the Remillard Family Foundation, who pledged a $4 million matching gift in early 2012. Other significant donors came forward including Chris and Bev Robert, Gerald and Marilyn Fels, Randy and Donna Becker, Norm and Esther Lavoie and the Janet Malser Humanities Trust.
Former State Senate President Pro Tem Richard Moore also helped secure $1.5 million from the state’s fiscal 2014 budget specifically to support the campaign.
