Dr. Christopher Seidler Joins The Cancer Center at Harrington

SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. – April 6, 2010 – Christopher W. Seidler, M.D., a hematologist and oncologist, has joined the staff of The Cancer Center at Harrington, a state-of-the-art cancer treatment center on the campus of Harrington Hospital.

Dr. Seidler is accepting new patients. For an appointment, please call 508-764-2400.

Dr. Seidler specializes in Hematology/Medical Oncology and is joining Dr. Shakeeb Yunus, who is currently taking care of patients at the Cancer Center at Harrington.
Dr. Seidler, who is affiliated with UMass Memorial Health Care and is an Associate Professor at UMass School of Medicine, received his degree in medicine from Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine and is board certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology and Internal Medicine.

“We are very pleased Dr. Seidler, who has practiced in Worcester County for some time and has a large following, has chosen to see patients at The Cancer Center at Harrington,” said Diane Becquart, Director of the center. “With the addition of Dr. Seidler, as well as Dr. Yunus, we now have oncology physicians at The Cancer Center at Harrington five days a week.”

The Cancer Center at Harrington, operated by Harrington Hospital, provides chemotherapy and infusion services and has its own pharmacy suite. There is a resource room staffed by American Cancer Society and Harrington Hospital volunteers. The resource room provides a comfortable library-like setting where patients and their families can access literature and use a computer to learn more about cancer treatment. The Center also features private and semi-private spaces for infusion services, comfortable exam rooms and personal touches, such as a soothing waterfall in the main waiting area. The Cancer Center at Harrington is also a wireless hot spot, allowing those with WiFi capability on their laptop computer to access the Internet and e-mail. Patients and their families also have the advantage of social work services including counseling to deal with the psycho-social aspects of cancer. Complimentary services are available, including hand massages for patients to relax and enjoy during their visit.

The Center is the first and only advanced cancer treatment center in the region, offering both infusion and radiation therapy and is an example of Harringtons commitment to serving the needs of the community. Its opening in 2009 means patients who live in South Central Worcester County do not have to travel long distances to receive state-of-the-art treatment.

The Cancer Center at Harrington is Harrington Hospitals portion of a two-story facility on its campus called The Central Massachusetts Cancer Center. The Cancer Center at Harrington is on the second floor and Harringtons joint-venture partner, Radiation Therapy Services, Inc., is located on the first floor of the 21,000 square-foot, two-story, $14 million facility.

Radiation Therapy Services, Inc. began offering advanced radiation services at the facility in June 2009. The company employs a CT scanner to determine the exact size of the area to be treated and a state-of-the-art linear accelerator, known as a LinAc, to deliver the radiation. Radiation Therapy Services radiation oncology treatments include Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), which focuses the radiation treatment on the tumor and spares the normal tissue.
