WEBSTER, Mass. – May 29, 2014 – Harrington HealthCare System has been awarded a grant of $8,298 from the Janet Malser Humanities Trust as a contribution toward equipment for the new Emergency Department under construction at Harringtons Webster campus.
“We are grateful for the Janet Malser Trust and its generous gift to help us with our new Emergency Department in Webster,” said Pamela Zouranjian Connor, Administrator for the Webster campus, known as Harrington HealthCare at Hubbard. “They continue to show great support and enthusiasm for this project, which is needed in the Webster area.”
The Janet Malser Trust as well as the estate of Janet Malser has awarded a total of almost $100,000 to Harringtons new Emergency Department project since 2011.
This most recent grant from the Janet Malser Trust will allow Harrington to purchase two blanket warming units, each with differentiating capacities to provide heating from 98 degrees to 200 degrees to ensure maximum patient comfort and safety for patients at the Emergency Department.
Heated blankets have been proven to help calm a patient, especially during an emergency situation where many feel cold, anxious and uncertain. Applying pre-warmed blankets also has a positive psychological impact. Emergency Department visits are traumatic and frightening, causing the patient to experience physical responses such as shivering.
Harrington launched an $8.8 million campaign to rebuild the Webster Emergency Department in March 2012. Aided by donations and grants from individuals, foundations and local businesses, including a generous matching grant of $4 million from Arthur Remillard Jr. and his Remillard Family Foundation, Harrington was able to break ground on the project in October of 2013, and expects to open the new Emergency Department in the fall of 2014. The new Emergency Department will be known as the Remillard Family Emergency Department because of the matching grant from Mr. Remillard, the founder of Commerce Insurance in Webster. The project also received $1.5 million in funding in the fiscal 2014 budget for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, aided by the support of State Senate President Pro Tem Richard Moore, State Senator Stephen Brewer and State Representative Harold Naughton Jr.
Harrington HealthCare at Hubbards Emergency Department is the focal point of healthcare in Webster, Dudley, Oxford, Douglas, Thompson and surrounding communities in South Central Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut. The Emergency Department in Webster sees more than 12,000 patient visits a year, but has not had a substantial overhaul since it was constructed in 1955.
The Janet Malser Humanities Trust was established in 2009 as a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation. Its purpose is to fund educational, cultural, historic, and charitable causes in the towns of Dudley, Oxford, and Webster, Massachusetts.
Janet Malser was a lifelong resident of Dudley and Webster, Massachusetts. She established this Trust so that the causes she was involved with would continue to be supported when she was no longer with us. Her love of art, history, nature, and music inspired her to champion causes related to the arts and humanities, community service, and conservation. Through this Trust, Janets generosity of “self” will continue to be realized for years to come. This is her legacy.
