Cancer Center at Harrington holds Open House

Regions first advanced cancer treatment center opens doors to the public

SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 27, 2009 – The Cancer Center at Harrington, the regions first advanced cancer treatment center, will host an Open House for the community on Wednesday, Dec. 9, from 2-6 p.m.

The Open House will feature a ribbon cutting ceremony shortly after 2 p.m., featuring hospital personnel and some of the state legislators who have helped make The Cancer Center possible. Tours of the two-story facility, featuring the physicians, nurses and other staff, will take place throughout the afternoon. Literature on The Cancer Center at Harrington and on cancer treatment in general will be available. Light refreshments will be served.

The opening of The Cancer Center at Harrington means that patients in the region will not have to travel long distances to receive advanced cancer treatment, said Harrington Chief Executive Officer Edward Moore.

The Cancer Center, operated by Harrington, offers infusion services (chemotherapy) and is staffed by oncology physicians and oncology nurses. The center also features an American Cancer Society Resource Room, which provides a relaxing setting where patients can learn about cancer treatment. A social worker will also be part of The Cancer Center at Harrington so that patients and their families can receive counseling to deal with the psychological and social aspects of dealing with cancer.

“Harrington has built a state-of-the-art facility with the patients privacy and comfort in mind,” said Diane ecquart, Director of The Cancer Center at Harrington.
“Our center will soon add a breast reconstruction surgeon, a pain management center, urology services, reiki and other complementary therapies.”

The Cancer Center at Harrington is part of a $14 million two-story, free-standing facility at 55 Sayles Street at the edge of the Harrington Hospital campus in Southbridge. The entire 21,000 square-foot facility is called The Central Massachusetts Cancer Center. The first floor, which opened in June of 2009, is operated by Harringtons joint-venture partner, Radiation Therapy Services, Inc., which offers radiation treatment for cancer. The Open House will feature the entire facility, including Radiation Therapy Services.
