Radiation therapy offers the latest technology to fight cancer, including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT).
Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) utilizes a highly precise radiation system to deliver carefully calculated beams of intense radiation directly into a cancer. Successful IMRT depends both on specialized equipment and on a highly trained team of physicians, physicists, and technologists. 21st Century Oncology has acquired this equipment and assembled such a team.
Image-guided radiation therapy, or IGRT as it is commonly known, evolved from IMRT. IMRT provides far greater beam-shaping capabilities than 3D radiation therapy, thereby permitting far more sophisticated treatment. IGRT uses the image of the target (depending upon anatomical area) to guide the delivery of radiation for each and every treatment.
The Radiation Oncology suite is lead by Chief Radiation Oncologist TJ Fitzgerald. Dr. Fitzgerald is associated with UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, and specializes in adult and pediatric radiology. He is the chair of radiation oncology at UMass Memorial Medical Center, where he is also a professor of radiation oncology.
Dr. Fitzgerald brings clinical expertise and professionalism to our cancer center and our community, offering patients peace of mind during their treatments. He is joined by Dr. Timothy D. Shafman, and Dr Robert A. Stein.
