Radiation Oncology

Patients can receive radiation therapy on the first floor of our Cancer Center, operated by UMass Memorial Health – Harrington a leading developer and operator of radiation oncology centersFor more information or to book an appointment please call, 508-765-6830.

Radiation therapy offers the latest technology to fight cancer, including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT).

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) utilizes a highly precise radiation system to deliver carefully calculated beams of intense radiation directly into a cancer. Successful IMRT depends both on specialized equipment and on a highly trained team of physicians, physicists, and technologists.

IMRT provides far greater beam-shaping capabilities than 3D radiation therapy, thereby permitting far more sophisticated treatment. IGRT uses the image of the target to guide the delivery of radiation for each and every treatment.

About Your Physicians

The Department of Radiation Oncology is led by Dr TJ FitzGerald. Dr. FitzGerald is the Department chair at UMass Memorial Medical Center and specializes in adult and pediatric Radiation Oncology.

Dr. FitzGerald brings clinical expertise and professionalism to our cancer center and our community, offering patients peace of mind during their treatments. He is joined by Dr., Dr Johnathon Glanzman and Dr Robert A. Stein.

  • As one of the largest radiation oncology centers in the eastern United States, UMass Memorial provides advanced radiation therapy options for nearly 2,000 new patients each year.

What You Need to Know About Radiation Oncology

Radiation oncology (or radiation therapy) is a standard treatment for many cancers. The process uses high-energy X-rays or radiation implants to attack abdomen, bone, brain, breast, head and neck, prostate, spine, uterine, certain soft tissues and other cancer cells.

You can receive the following services:

  • Stereotactic surgery, a precise method for treating tumors.
  • Stereotactic body radiation therapy
  • Total body irradiation
  • Prostate seed implants
  • Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), a 3D therapy that uses computer-generated for more precise delivery of radiation to the tumor
