Pulmonary Medicine

Pulmonary medicine deals with the causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases affecting the lungs.

Under the care of one of our many board-certified pulmonologists, our patients find relief and customized care for their acute and chronic disorders.

Our physicians are trained to diagnose and manage a variety of pulmonary conditions, including:

  • Asthma
  • Emphysema
  • Pneumonia
  • Bronchitis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Lung abnormalities
  • Cancer

Outpatient Services

In conjunction with our respiratory therapy department, we provide pulmonary function testing and ongoing management of respiratory disorders. Our staff is highly trained and can provide information related to smoking cessation, inhaler use, and nebulizer treatments.

Pulmonary function testing is simply a number of tests that shows how well your lungs work. Results can show how well you’re able to breathe or how effective your lungs are at bringing oxygen into the body.

New at Harrington, our Body Plethysmograph machine, located in our pulmonary and cardiac unit in Southbridge, offers the most advanced pulmonary function testing equipment on the market to accurately test and diagnose lung function, including asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis.

Some of the machine’s benefits include:

• Bright, comfortable and spacious
• Adaptable for children and adults
• Two-way communication speaker
• Ergonomic chair designed to fit up to 400 lbs
• Wheelchair-accessible

In addition, our pulmonary technologists and staff provide information related to smoking cessation, inhaler use and nebulizer treatments.
